Envisioned this tutorial due to the large amount of people that do not know how to accomplish this effect using Photoshop, and that really don't like brushing by hand.

Sorry for the large filesize (2.07mb) and 700x7000, but I wanted to make it as detailed as possible so that no matter how novice you are with the program, you are able to create this effect.

Tools: Photohop 7
Total Time: Around 6 hours in bits and pieces starting this morning.

Comments, critique, typos reporting :) and :+fav:s very much appreciated.

As with every tutorial, you don't learn from a tutorial if you just followed the steps word by word and left it at the last step. Go further beyond the last step and let your imagination and your ingeniosity (sp?) flow, this is how I got the idea for this technique. Also, please feel free to note me so that I can see what you created with this tutorial and contact me to tell me what you found out by going on beyond the last step, it is always good to shre the knowledge.

Please lead all your comments to the copy of this tutorial at my account, this way I will get to read them more easily! [link]

nice way of doing it - great if you can't quite get the hue of your city image to match that of your planet. :D

Awesome, I've been trying to find a way to do this

I think that method was a bit awkward and unefficient. I'd also add a colour to the lights, and a glow by duplicating the finished layer and using gaussian blur. Keep in mind that you can also use a different picture, such as a stone photography.

Love the art, before yourself.

glad to see you went beyond the steps. that's the idea of creating tutorials. to see what people think of the way you do stuff and what others have to say from their experience about it.
